Understanding the Bible

A library, not just a book

The Bible isn't a single book. It's a library of 73 books (66 in Protestant traditions, plus 7 deuterocanonical books in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles), written over 1,500 years by more than 40 authors across three continents. History, poetry, prophecy, letters, law, and apocalyptic literature, all woven together into one extraordinary story of God's relationship with humanity.

Old Testament

39 books
  • The Law (Torah)

The foundation: creation, exodus, covenant and God's instructions for life.

  • History

Israel's story from conquest to exile: kings, battles, faithfulness and failure.

  • Poetry & Wisdom

Songs, proverbs, and deep questions about life, suffering and love.

  • Prophets

God's messengers calling people back, warning of judgement, promising hope.

New Testament

27 books
  • The Gospels

Four accounts of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The heart of it all.

  • Acts

The Holy Spirit launches the church from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.

  • Letters (Epistles)

Practical theology for real churches and real problems.

  • Revelation

A vision of the end, and the glorious new beginning.

Scripture for every struggle

What are you going through?

Whatever season you’re in, God’s word has something to say. Find the passages that speak directly to where you are right now.

Emotions

Anxiety & Worry

Your mind won't stop racing and everything feels heavy. You're not alone in this, and God has a lot to say about worry.

  • Philippians 4:6-7 Swap worry for prayer, and God's peace shows up.
  • Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus tells you to look at the birds. If God feeds them, he's got you too.
  • Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord. He can carry what you can't.
  • 1 Peter 5:6-7 He genuinely cares about what's eating at you.

Try this: Read Psalm 23 before bed.

Emotions

Depression & Sadness

Some days the weight is almost unbearable, and that's okay to admit. God doesn't flinch at your sadness. He draws closer.

  • Psalm 42 A brutally honest prayer for when you feel forgotten by God.
  • Psalm 34:17-18 God is near to the brokenhearted. That's a promise, not a suggestion.
  • Isaiah 41:10 God tells you three times: don't be afraid.
  • Romans 8:38-39 Nothing can cut you off from God's love. Nothing.

Try this: Read Psalms of lament (6, 13, 22, 42, 88).

Emotions

Fear

Fear can freeze you in place or keep you up at night. But Scripture is packed with reminders that God hasn't left you to face it alone.

  • Isaiah 41:10 Three promises stacked together: I'm with you, I'm your God, I'll help you.
  • Psalm 91 A vivid picture of what it looks like to trust God as your shelter.
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 God gave you a spirit of power, love, and self-control, not fear.
  • Joshua 1:9 The same words God gave Joshua before a terrifying mission.

Try this: Write out Isaiah 41:10.

Emotions

Anger & Bitterness

Anger itself isn't always wrong, but it can take root and turn bitter fast. These verses help you deal with it before it deals with you.

  • Ephesians 4:26-27 Be angry, but don't let it set up camp in your heart.
  • James 1:19-20 Quick to listen, slow to speak. Simple advice that's hard to follow.
  • Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer really does cool things down.
  • Hebrews 12:15 Bitterness is a root. Pull it before it grows.

Try this: Read Jonah in one sitting.

Emotions

Loneliness

You can feel lonely in a crowd or completely on your own. Either way, God sees you and he's closer than you think.

  • Psalm 68:6 God sets the lonely in families. He's in the business of connection.
  • Deuteronomy 31:6 He won't leave you. He won't forsake you. Full stop.
  • Psalm 139 You're known completely, and there's nowhere you can go where God isn't already there.
  • 1 Kings 19 Even Elijah felt totally alone. Watch how God showed up for him.

Try this: Read how God met Elijah in 1 Kings 19.

Emotions

Shame & Guilt

Guilt tells you that you did something wrong. Shame tells you that you are something wrong. God disagrees with both.

  • Romans 8:1 No condemnation for those in Christ. Let that sink in.
  • Psalm 103:12 As far as east is from west. That's how far your sins have been removed.
  • 1 John 1:9 Confess it, and he's faithful to forgive. Every single time.
  • Isaiah 61:7 God trades your shame for a double portion. That's his kind of math.

Try this: Read Psalm 51.

Emotions

Jealousy & Envy

Comparison is a thief, and envy will eat you from the inside out. These verses help you refocus on what God's actually doing in your life.

  • Proverbs 14:30 A peaceful heart gives life. Envy rots your bones.
  • Galatians 6:4 Test your own work, not someone else's highlight reel.
  • Psalm 37:1-7 Don't fret over those who seem to have it all. Trust God's timing.
  • James 3:14-16 Bitter envy leads to disorder. It's not from God.

Try this: Read Cain & Abel + parable of vineyard workers.

Sin & Temptation

Lust & Sexual Temptation

This is one of the hardest battles and one of the least talked about in church. You're not disqualified for struggling with it.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Your body is a temple. That's not guilt; it's identity.
  • Matthew 5:28-29 Jesus takes the battle seriously enough to talk about it directly.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 Every temptation comes with a way out. God always provides the exit.
  • Psalm 119:9-11 Hiding God's word in your heart is a real strategy, not just a cliche.

Try this: Read Proverbs 5-7.

Sin & Temptation

Pride

Pride is sneaky because it often disguises itself as confidence or competence. It's the sin that convinced Lucifer he didn't need God.

  • Proverbs 16:18 Pride comes before a fall. It's not a cliche; it's a warning.
  • James 4:6 God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
  • Philippians 2:3-8 Jesus, who had every right to boast, chose to serve instead.
  • Daniel 4 Nebuchadnezzar learned the hard way. You don't have to.

Try this: Read Philippians 2:1-11 daily for a week.

Sin & Temptation

Greed & Materialism

It's easy to let money and stuff become the thing you trust most. Jesus talked about money more than almost any other topic for a reason.

  • 1 Timothy 6:6-10 The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Not money itself, the love of it.
  • Matthew 6:19-21 Where your treasure is, your heart follows. Check where yours is pointing.
  • Luke 12:13-21 The rich fool stored up everything and lost it all in one night.
  • Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever loves money never has enough. Solomon learned that firsthand.

Try this: Read Ecclesiastes.

Sin & Temptation

Lying & Dishonesty

Small lies build up. They erode trust and pull you further from the person God's shaping you to be. Truth-telling is a muscle you can strengthen.

  • Proverbs 12:22 The Lord detests lying lips but delights in people who tell the truth.
  • Ephesians 4:25 Put off falsehood. Speak truthfully, because we belong to each other.
  • John 8:32 The truth will set you free. Jesus wasn't speaking in metaphor.
  • Acts 5:1-11 Ananias and Sapphira's story is sobering. God takes honesty seriously.

Try this: Read Psalm 15.

Sin & Temptation

Gossip & Harmful Speech

Words carry more power than we usually give them credit for. What you say can build someone up or tear them apart.

  • James 3:1-12 The tongue is a small fire that can burn down a whole forest.
  • Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Choose wisely.
  • Ephesians 4:29 Only say what builds others up. That's the filter.
  • Proverbs 16:28 A gossip separates close friends. It's that destructive.

Try this: Read James (all 5 chapters).

Sin & Temptation

Addiction

You know it's got a hold on you, and willpower alone isn't cutting it. Paul understood that struggle deeply, and so does God.

  • Romans 7:15-25 Paul's honest confession: I do what I don't want to do. You're not the only one.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12 Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Don't be mastered by anything.
  • Galatians 5:1 Christ set you free. Don't let yourself be chained up again.
  • Psalm 107:13-14 He breaks chains and cuts through bars of iron. That's not poetry; it's power.

Try this: Read Romans 6-8 back to back.

Sin & Temptation

Unforgiveness

Holding on to unforgiveness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to get sick. It hurts you most of all.

  • Matthew 18:21-35 The unforgiving servant was forgiven millions but couldn't forgive pennies.
  • Colossians 3:13 Forgive as the Lord forgave you. That's the standard.
  • Mark 11:25 When you stand praying, forgive. It's connected to your own relationship with God.
  • Genesis 50:15-21 Joseph forgave the brothers who sold him into slavery. If he could, there's hope for you.

Try this: Read Joseph's story (Gen 37-50).

Sin & Temptation

Laziness & Procrastination

Putting things off feels harmless in the moment, but it adds up. God has work for you to do, and he's given you what you need to do it.

  • Proverbs 6:6-11 Go watch the ants. They don't need a boss to get things done.
  • Colossians 3:23 Work at it with all your heart, as if you're working for the Lord.
  • Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.
  • Proverbs 13:4 The sluggard craves but gets nothing. The diligent are fully satisfied.

Try this: Read the "sluggard" Proverbs together.

Life Trials

Grief & Loss

There's no shortcut through grief. But God promises to be close to the brokenhearted, and Scripture gives you words when you can't find your own.

  • Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. He doesn't stand at a distance.
  • Revelation 21:4 A day is coming when every tear will be wiped away for good.
  • John 11:35 Jesus wept. Two words that prove God understands your grief.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 God comforts you so you can comfort others with the same comfort.

Try this: Read Job slowly over weeks.

Life Trials

Suffering & Pain

When suffering hits, it's natural to ask why. The Bible doesn't always answer that question, but it does tell you who's with you in it.

  • Romans 5:3-5 Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 What you see is temporary. What you can't see is eternal.
  • Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength. Even when the earth gives way.
  • 1 Peter 4:12-13 Don't be surprised by suffering. You're sharing in Christ's experience.

Try this: Read Habakkuk.

Life Trials

Financial Hardship

Money stress keeps you up at night and colours everything. God doesn't promise to make you rich, but he does promise to provide what you need.

  • Philippians 4:19 God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches.
  • Matthew 6:31-33 Seek his kingdom first. The rest will follow.
  • Proverbs 30:8-9 Give me neither poverty nor riches. Just enough to depend on you.
  • Psalm 37:25 David lived a long life and never saw God's people abandoned.

Try this: Read Proverbs 10-15.

Life Trials

Illness & Health

When your body fails you, it shakes everything. God cares about your physical suffering just as much as your spiritual life.

  • Psalm 41:3 The Lord sustains you on your sickbed and restores you from illness.
  • James 5:14-16 Call for prayer. There's real power in the community praying over you.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul's thorn wasn't removed, but God's grace was enough. Sometimes that's the answer.
  • Isaiah 53:5 By his wounds we are healed. Jesus knows physical pain intimately.

Try this: Read Jesus' healing stories in Mark 1-3.

Life Trials

Waiting & Unanswered Prayer

You've prayed and prayed and nothing seems to change. Waiting on God is one of the hardest things you'll ever do, but it's not wasted time.

  • Psalm 27:14 Wait for the Lord. Be strong, take heart, and wait.
  • Isaiah 40:31 Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They'll soar.
  • Habakkuk 2:3 The vision awaits its appointed time. It won't be late.
  • Genesis 15-21 Abraham waited 25 years for the promise. God still came through.

Try this: Read Psalms of Ascent (120-134).

Life Trials

Persecution & Opposition

Following Jesus was never supposed to be popular. If you're getting pushback for your faith, you're actually in good company.

  • Matthew 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted. Rejoice, because your reward is great.
  • 2 Timothy 3:12 Everyone who wants to live a godly life will face persecution. It's a when, not an if.
  • 1 Peter 4:12-16 Don't be surprised by the fiery trial. Rejoice that you share in Christ's sufferings.
  • Acts 5:40-42 The apostles left rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for Jesus.

Try this: Read Acts.

Relationships

Marriage Struggles

  • 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. Read it slowly and let it challenge you.
  • Ephesians 5:21-33 Mutual submission and sacrificial love. That's the blueprint.
  • Song of Solomon A whole book celebrating romantic love. God's not embarrassed by it.
  • Colossians 3:12-14 Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. Above all, love.

Try this: Read Song of Solomon together.

Relationships

Broken Friendships

Losing a close friend can hurt as much as any breakup. Scripture understands betrayal, distance, and the hope of reconciliation.

  • Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times. That's the gold standard for friendship.
  • Psalm 41:9 Even David knew what it felt like to be betrayed by a close friend.
  • Proverbs 27:5-6 Wounds from a friend can be trusted. Honest friends are worth keeping.
  • Romans 12:17-21 Don't repay evil with evil. Overcome evil with good.

Try this: Read about David and Jonathan (1 Sam 18-20).

Relationships

Parenting Challenges

Kids don't come with a manual, but God's word has more to say about raising them than you might expect. You don't have to figure this out alone.

  • Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way they should go. It's an investment that pays off.
  • Deuteronomy 6:6-9 Talk about God's word everywhere: at home, on the road, morning and night.
  • Ephesians 6:4 Don't exasperate your children. Bring them up with the Lord's instruction.
  • Psalm 127:3 Children are a gift from the Lord. Even on the hard days.

Try this: Read the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32).

Relationships

Conflict & Difficult People

Some people test every ounce of your patience. God calls you to love them anyway, and he gives you practical wisdom for how.

  • Romans 12:14-18 If it's possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
  • Matthew 18:15-17 Jesus gave a clear process for dealing with conflict. Follow it.
  • Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath. It works more often than you'd think.
  • Matthew 5:44 Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. That's the Jesus way.

Try this: Read Romans 12.

Identity

Low Self-Worth

The voice in your head says you're not enough. God's voice says something completely different, and his opinion is the one that matters.

  • Psalm 139:13-16 You were knit together with intention. Every detail was on purpose.
  • Ephesians 2:10 You're God's handiwork, created for good works he planned in advance.
  • Jeremiah 1:5 Before you were born, God knew you and set you apart.
  • 1 Peter 2:9 You're chosen, royal, holy, and belonging to God. That's your identity.

Try this: Read Psalm 139 daily for a week.

Identity

Purpose & Direction

You're not sure what you're supposed to be doing with your life. That uncertainty is more common than you think, and God's not in a rush.

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust the Lord with all your heart. He'll make your paths straight.
  • Jeremiah 29:11 Plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans for hope and a future.

  • Psalm 32:8 God says: I will instruct you and teach you the way to go.

Try this: Read Ruth.

Identity

Failure & Starting Over

You messed up and you're wondering if it's too late for a fresh start. The Bible is full of people who failed spectacularly and were still used by God.

  • Lamentations 3:22-23 His mercies are new every morning. Every single morning.
  • Micah 7:8 Though I have fallen, I will rise. The Lord will be my light.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old is gone.
  • John 21:15-19 Peter denied Jesus three times, and Jesus restored him three times. That's grace.

Try this: Follow Peter's story from Mark 14 to Acts 2.

Spiritual Life

Doubt & Questioning

Doubt doesn't mean you've lost your faith. Some of the most honest prayers in the Bible came from people who weren't sure God was listening.

  • Mark 9:24 "I believe; help my unbelief!" One of the most honest prayers ever prayed.
  • Psalm 73 Asaph almost gave up on faith. Then he went into God's sanctuary.
  • John 20:24-29 Thomas doubted, and Jesus didn't scold him. He showed up.
  • Habakkuk 1-2 Habakkuk asked God the hard questions directly. God answered.

Try this: Read Ecclesiastes.

Spiritual Life

Spiritual Dryness

God feels distant, prayer feels hollow, and the Bible feels like just words on a page. You haven't done anything wrong. Dry seasons happen to everyone.

  • Psalm 63:1 My soul thirsts for you in a dry and weary land. David's been where you are.
  • Isaiah 43:19 God makes streams in the wasteland. He's doing something new, even now.
  • Psalm 42:1-2 As the deer pants for water, my soul pants for you, God.
  • 1 Kings 19:4-8 Elijah was burnt out and ready to quit. God sent food and let him rest.

Try this: Read the Psalms of thirst (42, 63, 84).

Spiritual Life

New Believer

Welcome. You've just started the most important journey of your life. These readings will give you solid ground to stand on as you grow.

  • John's Gospel The best place to start. John wrote it so you'd believe and have life.
  • Psalm 1 A short psalm about what it looks like to build your life on God's word.
  • Romans 8 One of the greatest chapters ever written. No condemnation, nothing can separate you.
  • Ephesians Six chapters on who you are in Christ and how to live it out.

Try this: Read John, one chapter a day, for 21 days.

Spiritual Life

Gratitude & Joy

Joy isn't the absence of problems; it's the presence of God. And gratitude is the fastest way to shift your perspective on a hard day.

  • Psalm 100 Enter his gates with thanksgiving. This psalm is pure, concentrated praise.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.
  • Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Paul said it twice because he meant it.
  • Nehemiah 8:10 The joy of the Lord is your strength. Not happiness. Joy.

Try this: End each day with Psalms 145-150.

Better together

Group study guide

1

Create safety, not performance

The best groups aren’t impressive. They’re honest. Create space where questions are welcome and vulnerability is safe.

2

Read the text together, out loud

There’s power in hearing Scripture spoken aloud. Read it slowly, together, and let the words fill the room.

3

Ask open questions, not quiz questions

Instead of ‘What does verse 3 mean?’, try ‘What stands out to you?’ Open questions invite conversation, not performance.

4

Let silence do its work

Don’t rush to fill quiet moments. Silence after a question means people are thinking. That’s exactly what you want.

5

Context before application

Before asking ‘What does this mean for us?’, ask ‘What did this mean for them?’ Understanding context prevents misapplication.

6

End with action, not just discussion

Good Bible study changes something. End each session by asking: ‘What will you do differently this week?’

60-minute session template

Settle in. Pray briefly. Ask God to speak through his word. Keep it natural, not formal.

Approaches to Scripture

How to read the Bible

There’s no single correct way to read the Bible. Different approaches serve different purposes. Here are six methods to help you engage with Scripture in ways that suit your season, your time, and your curiosity.

Devotional reading

Read slowly and prayerfully, letting the words wash over you. Don’t rush to analyse. Simply ask, ‘What is God saying to me today?’ This is reading as conversation, not study.

Tip: Start with just 5 minutes. Psalms and Proverbs are perfect for devotional reading.

Study method

Dig deeper with cross-references, commentaries, and word studies. Ask the journalist’s questions: who wrote this, to whom, why, and what did it mean to the original audience?

Tip: Keep a notebook beside your Bible. Writing solidifies understanding.

Narrative reading

Read the Bible like the story it is. Follow the grand arc from creation to restoration, letting each book contribute to the larger narrative.

Tip: Try reading an entire book in one sitting. Mark takes about 90 minutes, and it’s electrifying.

Lectio Divina

An ancient four-step practice: read (lectio), reflect (meditatio), respond (oratio), rest (contemplatio). Let a small passage work its way deep into your heart.

Tip: This 1,500-year-old monastic practice pairs beautifully with quiet mornings and a cup of tea.

Topical study

Choose a theme (grace, justice, prayer, suffering) and trace it through both Testaments. Watch how ideas develop and deepen across the biblical story.

Tip: A cross-reference Bible or concordance is invaluable for this method.

Memorisation

Commit key verses to memory. When Scripture lives in your mind, it shapes how you think, respond, and see the world.

Tip: Start with one verse a week. Write it on a card, stick it to your mirror, repeat it until it’s yours.

Your path through Scripture

Cover to Cover

Read the entire Bible in one year. About 15 minutes per day. This is the marathon, and it will change you.

“This isn’t a duty to perform. It isn’t a box to tick. Reading the Bible is simply spending time with someone who loves you.”

If that last sentence surprises you, stay with it. The Bible isn’t a textbook to master or a checklist to complete. It’s a conversation, one that’s been going for thousands of years, and you’re invited to join it wherever you are, whenever you’re ready.

There is no ‘behind’. There is no catching up. God isn’t keeping score of your reading streak. He simply loves to speak to you through his word. So take a breath, let go of any guilt, and begin.

Letting go of pressure

Myths & truths

Find your pace

Building a rhythm

2 min

One-verse morning

Start your day with a single verse. Read it. Sit with it. Let it set the tone.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.Psalm 119:105

5 min

Psalm a day

150 psalms. Five months of raw, honest prayers that mirror every human emotion.

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.Psalm 42:1

10 min

Chapter-a-day walk

One chapter per day. No pressure to analyse, just let the story unfold.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.Psalm 119:11

15 min

Journal method

Read a passage, then write one thought, one question, and one prayer.

But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it.Matthew 13:23

20 min

Listen-along

Play an audio Bible while following along. Hearing it read aloud changes everything.

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message.Romans 10:17

Any time

Anchor habit

Attach Bible reading to something you already do: after coffee, during lunch, before sleep.

Be still, and know that I am God.Psalm 46:10

Grace, not guilt

When you fall off the wagon

Don’t restart, just resume

You didn’t fail. Pick up wherever you left off. There’s no penalty for a pause.

Drop the guilt immediately

Guilt is not from God. He’s glad you’re back. That’s all that matters.

Make it easier, not harder

If 20 minutes felt too much, try 5. Lower the bar until it’s impossible to fail.

Tell someone you’re coming back

Text a friend: ‘I’m picking up my Bible again.’ Accountability is powerful.

Remember why you started

Not because you had to, but because something in you wanted to. That desire hasn’t gone.

Change the format

Try audio. Try a different translation. Try reading outside. Variety reignites curiosity.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

The invitation never expires. Whether this is your first time opening a Bible or your ten thousandth, God’s word is alive, and it’s for you, today, exactly as you are.

Going deeper

Tips for deeper reading

01

Set a regular time

Anchor your reading to a daily habit. Morning, lunch, or evening. Consistency matters more than duration.

02

Pray first

Before you read, pause. Ask God to open your eyes to what he wants to show you. Even a one-sentence prayer changes the posture of your heart.

03

Read with others

Join a group, text a friend about what you’re reading, or follow along with a community reading plan. The Bible was meant to be shared.

04

Use a physical Bible

Screens are convenient, but paper reduces distraction. Underline, highlight, write in the margins. Make it yours.

05

Don’t skip confusion

When something doesn’t make sense, sit with it. Look it up. Ask someone. Confusion is the doorway to deeper understanding.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

2 Timothy 3:16

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
